1. You arrived in Belgium to race, for the first time, a few weeks ago. How were the first races? Are there many differences between Belgium and the United States? The first two Belgian kermesse races were outstanding and very eye-opening. I have learned so much in the past week and I am looking forward to carrying these experiences with me for the remainder of my cycling career and life. There are many differences between racing in Belgium and the United States. The United States has smaller races with fewer competitors, slightly lower speeds, and less technical aspects. The United States has very wide roads, which allows for increased movement in the peloton. Bike handling is very important in Belgium, along with mental perseverance since the races are longer.
2. Why did you choose Belgium for cycling? I chose Belgium for cycling because it is the mecca of cycling competitions. Also, Team Rokform offers a trip to Europe for racing. I was fortunate enough to be able to join the team for racing, in Belgium, this year.
3. You are here with seven other riders from Team Rokform. How long are you staying in Belgium? What are the team goals during your stay in Belium? Yes. We will be staying in Belgium for about three weeks. During our stay in Belgium, we will be looking to gain as much knowledge as possible. Competing in Belgium is a rare opportunity for Americans. Of course we are looking for solid results but the most important things are to have fun, leave everything on the course, and stay safe.
4. What are your personal goals for racing in Belgium? Racing in Belgium has been my priority for the entire season. My personal goals are similar to the team goals. It is difficult to judge the competition in Belgium so I am looking to have fun, stay safe, and compete to the best of my ability. If I finish a race completely empty and out of energy, I will be content.
5. The next race is '4-daagse van Kontich'. What are you expecting from this race? I have heard the Sint Martinusprijs Stage Race is one of the most prestigious races in Belgium. I am eager to stay at the front of the peloton and remain out of trouble. Through racing smart, I am confident that I will be able to have a few great finishes.
6. How has the season been going until now? The season has been going well to this point. Unfortunately, I have not won any races but our team is having an amazing season. Personally, I have three second places this season and my last win was at the end of the 2013 season. Racing in Belgium has been the number one goal of my entire season. I am glad that this moment is here and I am living a dream.
